Nigeria’s digital skills gap is one of the most significant structural challenges facing its economic development. As the Commissioner for Communications Technology and Digital Economy, Niger State, I made digital inclusion a cornerstone of our transformation agenda — because no digital economy can reach its potential while large segments of the population remain excluded from it.

The Programme

We launched a state-wide initiative to provide free digital skills training and Microsoft certification vouchers to residents of Niger State — what I call Nigerlites. The goal was straightforward: remove the cost barrier to globally recognised technology credentials, and give young people, women, and job-seekers a measurable, bankable qualification.

Why Microsoft Certifications?

Microsoft certifications are globally recognised, employer-trusted, and directly tied to roles in cloud computing, cybersecurity, data analysis, and digital productivity. A Niger State resident with a Microsoft Fundamentals certification can compete for remote work opportunities anywhere in the world. That is the point.

What Empowerment Actually Looks Like

Digital empowerment is not a ceremony. It is not a press release. It is the moment a young woman in Minna can apply for a remote data entry role and show up with a credential that proves she is ready. It is the moment a small business owner in Bida can use cloud tools to run his accounts without needing to hire an accountant. That is what this programme was designed to create.

This initiative feeds directly into Niger State’s broader goal of achieving 75% digital literacy by 2027 — now being pursued through NSITDEA’s mandate as the state’s autonomous digital transformation agency.
